Johnson Kalu Must Stay!

My name is Johnson Kalu I am a member of the Igbo people & was born in Lagos (Nigeria) on 1st October 1976 - the only child of Benje & Florence Kalu - when I was in Nigeria I worked as a farmer & worshipped in my local Baptist Church.

In 2001 I became an active member of MASSOB (Movement for the actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra a non-violent peace seeking secessionist movement with the aim of securing the resurgence of the state of Biafra from Nigeria) - despite its peaceful stance members of MASSOB have been attacked, imprisoned & murdered.

MASSOB was banned by the Nigerian Government in 2001.

During March 2006 we were demonstrating peacefully in the Abia state of Nigeria - after the demonstration while I rested nearby my house was attacked by the police & set alight destroying all my property.

Fortunately, as I was not in my house I escaped this attack & realizing the danger a friend helped me flee Nigeria to the UK.

If I am returned to Nigeria I will be immediately arrested & imprisoned & quite possibly murdered because of my open involvement with the protests & MASSOB.

"The Nigerian police are responsible for hundreds of unlawful killings every year - police don't only kill people by shooting them; they also torture them to death, often while they are in detention" Erwin van der Borght, Amnesty International

I suffer from a number of medical conditions including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder & epilepsy - all of which are aggravated by my current situation.

Since being in the UK I have met & married my lovely wife Sofia Mweni (a South African national) on 20th December 2008 & with the help of the Boaz Trust, WAST & other organizations we have begun to rebuild our lives in Manchester, as husband & wife - we are both very active in the Manchester community & our church.
With thanks, Johnson Kalu

Sofia & The Boaz Trust
On Wednesday 16th February 2011 Johnson was detained when a number of UKBA officers forcibly entered the home where he was living with Sofia & dragged him from their marriage bed and took him to Colnbrook IRC.

Nigeria still remains a dangerous country for Johnson - we urge you to help right this terrible wrong, don't let UKBA return Johnson Kalu to Nigeria.

He belongs in Manchester with his wife Sofia.
