Update on end to child detention! - but UKBA still detaining children
The government is committed to ending the detention of children for immigration purposes. We can announce that Immigration Minister Damian Green will be leading a wide-ranging review to achieve this, setting out plans in the coming months. The review - which starts now - will include talking to a range of experts, charities and organisations which represent the interest of children, to create viable long-term solutions. This review is about protecting the welfare of children, while still ensuring the removal of those who have no legal right to be in this country

Children 'to remain' at Dungavel detention centre
Children of asylum seekers continue to be held at the Dungavel detention centre despite a coalition promise to end the practice. A Pakistani woman, Sehar Shebaz, and her eight-month-old daughter Wanya were detained after reporting to officials in Glasgow on Monday. A spokesman for the immigration minister Damian Green said the current system must stay in place for now.

Internal displacement worsening, outlook bleak
The worst predictions about internal displacement are coming true, the United Nations' top humanitarian official said on Monday, anticipating that 2010 would be as bad as last year, which saw the number of internally displaced people hit a record high. A total of 27.1 million people were displaced by conflict or violence within their own countries in 2009, the highest number since records began in the mid-1990s, according to a report by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre.

War Crimes in Sri Lanka / Executive summary and recommendations
The Sri Lankan security forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) repeatedly violated international humanitarian law during the last five months of their 30-year civil war. Although both sides committed atrocities throughout the many years of conflict, the scale and nature of violations particularly worsened from January 2009 to the government's declaration of victory in May. Evidence gathered by the International Crisis Group suggests that these months saw tens of thousands of Tamil civilian men, women, children and the elderly killed, countless more wounded, and hundreds of thousands deprived of adequate food and medical care, resulting in more deaths.

Time to pull out UN troops in Congo? Not so fast
Congo's President Kabila wants to pull out UN forces. But Congo is still at war and dealing with tremendous violence. The international community and the Congolese need to create a vision and strategy first. The country's path to democratic self-rule has been marred by a long dictatorship, two deadly regional wars, and the near-collapse of the state. President Joseph Kabila has announced an incredibly risky way to mark the occasion: He wants to withdraw most of the United Nations peacekeepers before the big party, and the remainder by next summer.
